  51.     The tools in this group are GIMP's basic painting tools, and they
  52.     have enough features in common to be worth discussing together in
  53.     this section.  Features common to all brush tools are described in
  54.     the <a href="ch03s03.html#gimp-tool-brush" title="3.1.┬áCommon Features">Common Features</a>
  55.     section.  Features specific to an individual tool are described in
  56.     the section devoted to that tool.

  59.     The Pencil is the crudest of the tools in this group:  it makes
  60.     hard, non-anti-aliased 
  61.     brushstrokes.  The Paintbrush is intermediate: it is probably the
  62.     most commonly used of the group.  The Airbrush is the most
  63.     flexible and controllable:  it is the only one for which the
  64.     amount of paint applied depends on the speed of brush movement.
  65.     This flexibility also makes it a bit more difficult to use than
  66.     the Paintbrush, however.

  69.     All of these tools share the same brushes, and the same options
  70.     for choosing colors, either from the basic palette or from a
  71.     gradient. All are capable of painting in a wide variety of modes.

  114.           The Mode dropdown list provides a selection of paint application
  115.           modes. This setting appears in the Tool Options for all
  116.           brush tools, but it is grayed out for all except the tools
  117.           in this group, the Ink tool, and the Clone tool.  A list of
  118.           possible modes can be found in the <a href="go01.html#glossary-modes">Glossary</a>.  For the most part
  119.           these modes are the same as the layer combination modes
  120.           available in the Layers dialog, and you can understand their
  121.           effects by imagining that the paint is applied to a separate
  122.           layer above the target layer, with the mode for the layer
  123.           set as specified.  Three of the modes are special, though:
  124.         </p>
  125.               <p><b>Color Erase.┬á</b>
  126.             This mode erases the foreground color, replacing it with
  127.             partial transparency.  It acts like the <a href="ch06s03s14.html" title="3.14.┬áColor to Alpha">Color to Alpha</a>
  128.             filter, applied to the area under the brushstroke.  Note
  129.             that this only works on layers that possess an alpha
  130.             channel; otherwise, this mode is identical to Normal.
  131.            </p>
  132.               <p><b>Behind.┬á</b>
  133.             This mode applies paint only to non-opaque areas of the
  134.             layer:  the lower the opacity, the more paint is applied.
  135.             Thus, painting opaque areas has no effect; painting
  136.             transparent areas has the same effect as normal mode.  The
  137.             result is always an increase in opacity.  Of course none of
  138.             this is meaningful for layers that lack an alpha channel.

  153.             In this very useful mode, for fuzzy brushes the gray level
  154.             of the brush determines not the paint density, but rather
  155.             the probability of applying paint.  This gives a nice way of
  156.             creating rough-looking paintstrokes.

  174.           Instead of using the foreground color (as shown in the Color
  175.           Area of the Toolbox), by checking the "Use color from
  176.           gradient" option you can choose to paint with a gradient,
  177.           giving colors that change gradually along the brush
  178.           trajectory.  For basic information on gradients, see the
  179.           <a href="ch02s04s09.html" title="4.9.┬áGradients">Gradients</a> section.

  182.           You have several options to control what gradient is used
  183.           and how it is laid out:

  185.               <p><b>Gradient.┬á</b>
  186.             Here you see a display of the current gradient.
  187.             Clicking on it brings up a Gradient Selector, which will
  188.             allow you to choose a different gradient.
  189.           </p>
  190.               <p><b>Reverse.┬á</b>
  191.             Normally a brushstroke starts with colors from the left
  192.             side of the gradient, and progresses rightward.  If
  193.             "Reverse" is checked, the stroke starts with colors from
  194.             the right side, and progresses leftward.

  196.               <p><b>Length.┬á</b>
  197.             This option sets the distance corresponding to one
  198.             complete cycle through the gradient colors.  The default
  199.             units are pixels, but you can choose a different unit
  200.             from the adjoining Units menu.

  277.             This option determines what happens if a brushstroke
  278.             extends farther than the Length specified above.  There
  279.             are three possibilities:  "None" means that the color
  280.             from the end of the gradient will be used throughout the
  281.             remainder of the stroke; "Sawtooth wave" means that the
  282.             gradient will be restarted from the beginning, which
  283.             will often produce a color discontinuity; "Triangular
  284.             wave" means that the gradient will be traversed in
  285.             reverse, afterwards bouncing back and forth until the
  286.             end of the brushstroke.
